Pituffik Space Base marked its 75th anniversary this week as American, Greenlandic, Danish and Canadian representatives gathered at the strategic installation in northwestern Greenland.
The anniversary coincided with a change of command for the 821st Space Base Group. U.S. Space Force Col. Keith Morris replaced Col. Shawn Lee after previously serving as deputy commander of Space Delta 5 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
According to the official U.S. Northern Command report, attendees included Gen. Gregory Guillot, commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command; Gen. Michael Hyldgaard, Denmark’s chief of defense; Mininnguaq Kleist, Greenland’s permanent secretary for foreign affairs; and Maj. Gen. Søren Andersen, commander of Joint Arctic Command.
Guillot described Pituffik as a “cornerstone of our layered defense” and emphasized its role in detecting and responding to threats approaching North America through the Arctic.

Pituffik’s current mission is organized around space superiority, force projection and support for scientific research. The base’s Upgraded Early Warning Radar provides ballistic missile warning, missile defense and space domain awareness, while its satellite tracking facilities support American military and government spacecraft.
Construction of the installation began in January 1951 under defense agreements between the United States and Denmark. During Operation Blue Jay, ships delivered construction crews, equipment and materials through Arctic waters, allowing an operational airfield to be completed in 104 days.
The installation was renamed from Thule Air Base to Pituffik Space Base in 2023, adopting the traditional Greenlandic name for the surrounding area.
Lee said the base is “actively modernizing” its infrastructure to support new space operations and remain ahead of emerging threats.
One current procurement provides a smaller example of that continuing investment. As GreenlandEnergy.com reported Saturday, the Space Force is seeking a virtual firearms training system for the 821st Security Forces Squadron, known as the Arctic Wolves. Delivery and installation are required by January 22, 2027.
The anniversary and command transition place Morris at the head of the 821st Space Base Group as Pituffik enters its next phase of Arctic defense operations.
