The European Union will contribute €8 million toward solar panels and battery systems in Greenland’s smaller communities, helping reduce reliance on imported diesel and improve electricity supply.
According to a September 16 announcement from Naalakkersuisut, the EU contribution of approximately DKK 60 million will combine with DKK 98.7 million from Nukissiorfiit, bringing the total investment to DKK 158.7 million.
“The EU’s support makes it possible for us to carry out an investment that Nukissiorfiit could not manage alone,” said Jørgen Rosbach, Greenland’s minister for environment, nature, energy and research.
The hybrid systems will integrate solar panels and batteries with existing diesel generation. Solar panels will supply electricity when sunlight is available, while batteries will help smooth demand on generators.
The equipment will come from European companies under the agreement.
Naalakkersuisut said the funding would allow Nukissiorfiit to expand deployment despite financial pressure and extensive maintenance needs across its existing infrastructure.
