Nuuk Protest Over Jameson Land Draws Approximately 45

Approximately 45 people joined a demonstration in Nuuk on Monday evening against planned oil exploration at Jameson Land, a modest turnout that also exposed the wider political burden Greenland Energy Company now carries in Greenland.

GreenlandEnergy.com observed the gathering live by video call as Jørgen Boassen walked through central Nuuk. Boassen also provided original photographs and video recorded at the scene.

His estimate of approximately 45 participants was consistent with what GreenlandEnergy.com could see during the call and in the material he supplied. The demonstration was peaceful, with some Greenlandic flags carried through the city before participants gathered outside the municipal offices.

The Nuuk gathering was part of a call for demonstrations across Greenland issued by the local committee in Ittoqqortoormiit, the community closest to Greenland Energy Company’s planned drilling campaign.

Committee chairman Hans Brønlund had asked residents to gather outside municipal offices and other public meeting places at 19:00. He told DR that Greenland was not for sale and should not become America’s gas station.

This report covers the demonstration observed in Nuuk. Turnout in other communities is not included in the estimate.

A protest against the company, Trump or both?

The declared subject of the demonstration was Greenland Energy Company and its plans for Jameson Land. The gathering also reflected Greenland’s wider confrontation with President Donald Trump and his renewed demands for American control of the country.

Boassen, who is publicly known for his support of Trump, attended the demonstration and agreed to speak on the record.

“From what I saw, the protest seemed to be driven more by opposition to President Trump than by opposition to Greenland Energy Company,” Boassen said. “Many Greenlanders support mineral and oil exploration.”

Greenland Energy Company is an American business pursuing a resource project while the American president continues to say that Greenland should come under US control. Trump repeated that position at the NATO summit in Ankara on July 7, drawing another firm rejection from Greenland’s government and public.

Earlier demonstrations directed specifically at Trump brought thousands of people into the streets in Greenland and Denmark. Monday’s much smaller Nuuk gathering suggests that opposition to the Jameson Land project has not produced mobilization on that scale.

The political association is becoming part of the project

Greenland Energy Company has been pulled into Trump’s political orbit, and that association has caused serious damage to the project’s standing in Greenland.

That political baggage risks obscuring what the project could offer. If Greenland Energy Company follows every regulatory requirement, respects Greenlandic authority, consults honestly with Ittoqqortoormiit and delivers meaningful local employment and investment, the benefits to the community could be substantial.

The Nuuk turnout of approximately 45 people does not demonstrate a national consensus against exploration. It shows that the company must demonstrate that its project is independent of Trump’s agenda and prove that any development will proceed on Greenland’s terms.
