Jozef Síkela Outlines EU Plans for Greenland’s Energy, Minerals and Housing Ahead of Nuuk Visit

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is due in Nuuk on Sunday, September 6, for talks on strengthening relations with Greenland, as the EU outlines broader cooperation on energy, digital connectivity, housing and critical minerals.

During the September 6–7 visit, von der Leyen will meet Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Faroese Prime Minister Beinir Johannesen.

On Monday, Nielsen, Frederiksen and von der Leyen are scheduled to launch the Enhanced Satellite Connectivity Project for Greenland at Tusass facilities. They will also sign a renewed joint declaration by the EU, Greenland and Denmark on relations between the EU and Greenland, according to the European Commission’s visit announcement.

European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela and Special Adviser for EU Arctic Relations Jyrki Katainen will accompany the president.

Writing on X ahead of the trip, Síkela said the visit would build on consultations in May with Greenland’s government, entrepreneurs and local communities.

He highlighted Greenland’s hydropower potential, which he said could meet the country’s electricity needs eight times over, and its occurrence of 25 of the EU’s 34 designated critical raw materials. He also pointed to fisheries accounting for more than 90% of exports as a reason to diversify the economy.

Síkela said Greenland receives €225 million under the current EU budget, primarily supporting schools and vocational training. The Commission has proposed more than doubling that support in the next budget.

Cooperation is now expanding into clean energy, digital connectivity, housing and sustainable mineral development, he said, with initiatives prepared alongside Greenland’s government.

“Greenland’s future is decided by Greenlanders,” Síkela wrote.

A joint press conference is scheduled for Monday, September 7, at approximately 2:25 p.m. CEST, broadcast live through Europe by Satellite.
