Representatives from Greenland’s government, Nalik Ventures, Visit Ilulissat, Greenland Airports and Avannaata Kommunia will take part in an August 27 business seminar examining how Ilulissat’s new international airport can create economic opportunities across northern Greenland. Participants from Canada and Alaska are also expected to attend.
Greenland Airports Passenger Experience Manager Agathe Helene Præst Møller and Key Account Manager Allan Schrøder will represent the airport operator at the public event, which will be held at Sermermiut Kulturhus, the local community and cultural center in Ilulissat.
The seminar will consider opportunities in tourism, fisheries, transportation, services, innovation, investment and local employment. Avannaata Business Department head Carlo Lennert described the airport’s scheduled October 29 opening as a historic opportunity extending beyond Ilulissat to the entire northern region.
“How do we ensure that Northern Greenland benefits from these new opportunities? How can we turn increased accessibility into sustainable economic growth and stronger local communities?” Lennert asked in his announcement.
Municipal records show that the discussions are expected to extend beyond tourism and business growth. Avannaata anticipates increased road traffic, possible growth in the number of foreign residents, cultural changes and additional effects on health services, stores and other local infrastructure.
The seminar was proposed by Avannaata council member Heidi Møller of Demokraatit and approved by the municipal council in February. Municipal records also state that a business forum was contemplated, while the council approved restarting its inactive Business Council. This suggests the seminar could contribute to a longer term structure for regional business development.
Lennert confirmed to GreenlandEnergy.com on Monday that presenters will include representatives from Visit Ilulissat and the tourism industry, the Naalakkersuisoq responsible for infrastructure, Nalik Ventures, the Department of Business Affairs under the Naalakkersuisut administration, Greenland Airports, and Avannaata’s department responsible for construction, facilities and operations.
Participants from Canada and Alaska will also join the seminar, Lennert said, bringing an international perspective to discussions about tourism, infrastructure, investment and future business opportunities in North Greenland.
“The seminar will provide an opportunity to share information, discuss the opportunities created by the new airport, and explore potential future cooperation and business development in the region,” Lennert told GreenlandEnergy.com.
The Canadian and Alaskan participants have not yet been publicly identified.
The new Ilulissat Airport is scheduled to open October 29 with a 2,200 meter runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft and direct international services.
