Egede Returns as Greenland Foreign Minister With Minerals Brief

Former Greenland prime minister Múte B. Egede is taking on a new cabinet role covering foreign affairs, business, and mineral resources, bringing several of Greenland’s most sensitive portfolios under one senior political figure.

In a Facebook post announcing the move, Egede called the appointment “a big responsibility” and said Greenland faces significant pressure but also important opportunities. He said he is resigning as finance minister and taking up a new role covering foreign affairs, business, and mineral resources.

Greenland’s external relationships, commercial posture, and mineral policy are now being brought closer together in a single portfolio.

Egede returns to the portfolio with deep political experience and a clear public record on sovereignty and resource development. He has long argued that Greenland is not for sale while also presenting responsible development of the island’s natural resources as part of the path toward greater economic strength and more room to act on its own terms.

The appointment also comes at a sensitive moment for Greenland’s mining and investment environment. Questions around foreign participation, licensing, and long-term control of strategic resources are now central to Greenlandic politics. Putting foreign affairs, business policy, and mineral resources under the same minister suggests the government wants those issues handled in a more coordinated way.

Egede is not entering the role as an unknown quantity. He held the raw materials file before, serving as minister for raw materials and the labor market between 2016 and 2018, and he returns with a clearer view than most of how Greenland’s political, economic, and resource interests intersect.
