Japan’s planned follow up visit to Greenland will be carried out by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, while METI and Japanese companies will not participate, JOGMEC and Japan’s embassy in Denmark confirmed to GreenlandEnergy.com.
The visit is still being coordinated, but JOGMEC confirmed that it is planning to travel to Greenland for a follow up field trip focused on technical evaluation.
JOGMEC Only Visit
The confirmation clarifies the scope of Japan’s planned follow up in Greenland. Earlier reporting suggested a broader delegation involving METI, Japanese trading companies and JOGMEC. The Embassy of Japan in Denmark told GreenlandEnergy.com that, for this visit, only JOGMEC will participate.
The Embassy of Japan in Denmark confirmed to GreenlandEnergy.com that METI and Japanese companies will not participate in the visit. “METI and Japanese companies will not be joining,” Masakazu Tanaka wrote in response to questions. The embassy said it will not accompany the visit, but remains in contact with JOGMEC.
JOGMEC also confirmed the planned visit, saying the timing is “currently being coordinated.”

Follow Up After Winter Limits
The agency said the trip follows a November 2025 public private mission to Greenland that was organized by JOGMEC at the request of METI. That earlier mission explored future cooperation opportunities with Greenland, which JOGMEC described as a region with potential for diverse mineral resources.
Because the November mission took place during the cold season, JOGMEC said site visits were limited to feldspar production mines, and on-site inspections of other mineral deposits could not be carried out.
“We are currently making arrangements to conduct a follow up field trip for technical evaluation,” JOGMEC’s Public Relations Division told GreenlandEnergy.com.
Broader Than Rare Earths
JOGMEC framed the visit as broader resource cooperation with Greenland, rather than a rare earths only trip, pointing to the country’s potential for diverse mineral resources.
Still Being Coordinated
JOGMEC said it is currently coordinating meetings with the Government of Greenland and other parties. The Embassy of Japan in Denmark separately said JOGMEC is still coordinating multiple appointments, including whether a meeting with the Greenlandic government can be arranged.
Both JOGMEC and the embassy said there are no plans to make a public announcement regarding the visit.
