Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen says he is heading to New York, carrying a message of unity and a responsibility to protect the country following a difficult period for many Greenlanders.
In a Facebook post written in Greenlandic, Nielsen acknowledged the worry and fear people have felt about their country’s future.
As he travels across the Atlantic, Nielsen says his thoughts are with families, children, young people and older residents who have followed developments with concern.
“My hope is that we can reach a calmer and more secure situation for our country,” Nielsen wrote, translated from Greenlandic. “We must take good care of Greenland, standing together on what matters most and continuing to insist that we are treated with respect.”
His departure follows the announcement of a security agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland, expected to be signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Danish and Greenlandic leaders have emphasized that the agreement respects the kingdom’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
Nielsen’s latest post focused on his responsibility to Greenland’s people, without setting out further agreement terms or a signing date.
“I am traveling to New York with that responsibility,” he wrote.
“Greenland is our home. Together, we must take care of it.”
