NUUK, Greenland — Travelers passing through Nuuk Airport will soon have access to a new airport lounge without needing a business class ticket, airline status or traditional lounge membership.
Greenland Airports will open the new Avani Lounge on August 12, offering access to all travelers for DKK 225, currently about US$35, for up to four hours.
The name “Avani” means “north” in Greenlandic, a deliberate reference to Greenland’s Arctic location and the lounge’s role as part of Nuuk’s growing international gateway.
In response to questions from GreenlandEnergy.com about who would be eligible to use the facility, Greenland Airports directed us to its newly published information for Lounge – Greenland Airports, which makes the access policy clear: all travelers can enter, with admission purchased directly at the lounge.
That makes Avani somewhat different from the traditional airport club lounge model, where access is often tied to premium cabin tickets, airline status, credit cards or membership programs.
Greenland Airports specifically notes that Priority Pass, LoungeKey, American Express Platinum and other loyalty cards do not currently provide complimentary access to Avani Lounge.
The lounge is intended for both leisure and business travelers and includes seating areas, food and space for passengers who want to work before departure. Greenland Airports describes it as a quieter alternative to waiting in the main terminal.
That quieter space may prove particularly welcome on days when Nuuk’s notoriously changeable weather disrupts flight schedules. When fog and strong winds roll across the airport and departures begin slipping, Avani could quickly become a small oasis for passengers facing an uncertain wait.
According to Greenland Airports, Avani Lounge will open each day at 8:00 a.m. and remain open until the departure of the last Atlantic flight of the day.
GreenlandEnergy.com has asked Greenland Airports to clarify the lounge’s seated capacity, total permitted occupancy and whether “last Atlantic flight” means the final international departure or whether the lounge remains open for later domestic departures.
Greenland Airports is also holding an opening event Wednesday, August 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with travelers invited to visit the lounge free of charge during the celebration.
The addition is another relatively small but visible sign of Nuuk Airport’s transition into Greenland’s primary international aviation gateway.
As international business, government and investment activity surrounding Greenland continues to increase, improvements such as lounges, work areas, hotels and other passenger services will increasingly form part of the infrastructure supporting that traffic.
For travelers, however, the proposition is considerably simpler: DKK 225 buys up to four hours away from the terminal crowds — and when the fog and winds roll into Nuuk, that quiet corner of the airport may feel considerably more valuable.

Greenland Airports has provided GreenlandEnergy.com with additional details about the new Avani Lounge at Nuuk Airport.
According to Greenland Airports, the lounge has seating capacity for approximately 40 to 45 passengers.
The airport also clarified that the lounge’s stated closing time is tied to the last Atlantic flight of the day, rather than necessarily the final departure from Nuuk Airport. However, closing time may also depend on whether passengers are still using the lounge.
